Exploring Worldwide Democratic Innovations

Inspiring new forms of democratic participation

‘Exploring Worldwide Democratic Innovations’ is an ongoing research project implemented by the European Democracy Hub and supported by the Robert Bosch Stiftung. The project explores emerging innovations in democratic participation around the world, offering an overview of the key lessons learned throughout the application of these innovations. By fostering collaboration among researchers, practitioners, and policymakers, this initiative facilitates the exchange of best practices and strategies within the realm of democratic innovations for improving internal EU democracy.

Within the framework of the project, the European Democracy Hub conducts a series of cross-country studies of different innovative forms of deliberative and participatory democracy from around the world. The objective is to explore forms of participation that are different from innovations in the West and that may help inspire ideas for reform for European states. The project gathers both country case studies and regional thematic case studies, as well as a synthesis report identifying patterns and trends in democratic innovations.

The project’s authors are a network of scholars and practitioners who have come together within the framework of the European Democracy Hub. Their research provides a nuanced perspective on democratic innovations within their region of expertise.
