Inspiring new forms of democratic participation

By fostering collaboration among researchers, practitioners, and policymakers, this initiative facilitates the exchange of best practices and strategies within the realm of democratic innovations for improving internal EU democracy.

Within the framework of the project, the European Democracy Hub conducted a series of cross-country studies of different democratic innovations from around the world. The objective is to explore innovations that are different from those in the West and that may help inspire ideas for reform for European states. The project gathers both country case studies and regional thematic case studies, as well as a synthesis report identifying patterns and trends in democratic innovations. These learnings come together in a policy recommendation paper on the Future of Democratic Innovations.

The project’s authors are a network of scholars and practitioners who have come together within the framework of the European Democracy Hub. Their research provides a nuanced perspective on democratic innovations within their region of expertise.

“Democratic innovation is still lagging behind the power of autocratisation. It needs to catch up and outpace the strategies of authoritarianism to safeguard and protect democracy and to meet evolving needs of citizens.”
